Helping out where I can

Not long before I started at Yipiyap I began volunteering at a charity shop of a local children’s charity. A month had passed since my final exam and I was equally as restless about my future as I was bored at home every day. So, I thought I’d spend a few hours a week helping others instead of watching TV all day.

I joined Yipiyap as I liked the idea of supporting pupils who need an extra boost. It’s a rewarding experience seeing pupils’ confidence grow in English. Not only that, I've met excellent teachers who have gone out of their way to help me in my first job. It’s a great feeling on the bus journey back home thinking about the thanks I have received that day or the excellent answer a pupil gave because of my guidance.

I’d share my positive experiences of my placement school with the other volunteers at the charity shop (a highlight for me was knowing about the Duchess of Sussex’s appearance at my school hours before the infamous kiss stealing!). Every day that I volunteer at the shop is eventful and this really boosts my motivation. A few months ago, I visited the hospice of the charity. I learnt about how the charity works; the amazing support they offer children with serious conditions and their families and witnessed the enthusiasm and optimism of all the volunteers.

In the last nine months, volunteering for Richard House Children's Hospice and working as a Yipiyap Tutor have helped me grow as a person. As I write this in lockdown, I reflect on how glad I am to have joined these two organisations. Both roles have their challenges; it's these challenges that helped give me the direction I was lacking.

Helping out where you can, can really make a difference!

Richard House Children’s Hospice is looking for donations now more so than ever. Any donations are immensely appreciated:
