Why be a gap year tutor?
You’ve just finished school, so why on earth would you want to go back?
As a yipiyap gap year tutor, you get paid to pass on what you’ve learnt to other students who will benefit from your fantastic knowledge and experience – so you’re doing a good deed whilst making money! And it doesn’t end there; as well as being paid for being a great person, you’re also building those vital extra credits for your CV, which will help when applying for higher education and jobs further down the line.
Is this for me?
We should make it really clear that you don’t have to want to go into teaching as a career to be a brilliant tutor.
This is a specially designed gap year opportunity that attracts school leavers who want to follow all sorts of careers. It’s an invaluable experience for anyone wanting to study Medicine, for example, as it showcases all the skills you need to demonstrate but we are proud to have had the engineers, philosophers, scientists and fashion designers of the future among our tutors. Click here to find out more about our former tutors.
You also don’t need to have had any experience of tutoring – just a love of your subject, a warm personality and the ability to get stuck in to whatever needs doing. If you get a kick out of helping others achieve then this is the job for you.
As a tutor you’ll develop key skills, such as leadership, working responsibly as part of a team, showing empathy and using your initiative. Another big advantage of this job is that, by helping others, you’re strengthening your own knowledge of all the things you learnt as you teach them – it’s school but with only your favourite subjects and no homework!
But perhaps the best reason of all to apply to be one of our tutors is that as part of the yipiyap team, you’ll find there are lots of new friends to make. We keep everyone connected and arrange regular meet-ups so you can socialise with other tutors who are doing the same great work as you. You’ll have a ready made social network supporting you through your interviews and resits (if you choose to put yourself through more exams) and we’ll make sure that your gap year is one which you’ll look back on with great fondness and the sense that this was when you really became you.
That’s a lot of great reasons to make use of your gap year working for yipiyap.

Here’s how it works
You may be wondering how someone who has just passed their exams can go into helping other students pass theirs? Well, you’re actually very well placed – we work with our tutors to give them the skills to help others succeed. This works because you have something unique. There’s no significant age gap between you and your pupils, so you can relate on the same level to students who are working towards their exams and, by your example, really make a difference to their life chances.
We will provide you with all the training and information you need and we’ll also take care of the arrangements with the different schools.
There is the opportunity to work in a variety of places, with different types of students – from those who are struggling, to those who are exceptional, as well as students who are just looking to improve where they are at right now.
Earning and learning
You will receive a competitive rate of pay for your work and the position can be full time or part time, meaning you can save up for university, a car or travelling or just spend it all having a great year.
We know you’ll need days off for university interviews, your BMAT perhaps or exam resits in the summer – that’s fine, we’re here to help you while you look ahead and take the next step, whatever that is.
